The Shop has Launched!

I’m very pleased to finally announce that the Paper Duck Greetings online Shop has launched! It actually went “live” one week ago on Thanksgiving night, and was I ever thankful! After all, it’s *only* been 8-1/2 months since I last posted on the complexities of setting up the Zen Cart shopping cart software. Well, that’s the point here-I’m not using the zen cart-I ended up using the Google shopping cart! I’ll explain what happened in the next post. But, for now, Google is my choice and I think you’ll find it straightforward to put your items into its simple floating cart and then checkout with Google handling your credit card transaction. Once you sign up with them, you can shop at other merchants using your Google Checkout account and not have to worry about your card info getting out everywhere.  My Mom tried it out for the first time and test ordered some cards from my shop and she loved it. She said don’t change it…

The Shopping Cart

Yes, I’m working on it, laboriously and much too slowly as you may have noticed. I have to admit I’ve been procrastinating on getting this done. My reason is not an excuse just the truth: this is the most tedious and boring stage of my web site setup. I’m trying the open source Zen Cart and there are many details in setting up the security and configuring the mechanics of how the cart will run. I’m following the tutorials on the zen cart site plus following the chapters in the 400 page Zen Cart book. And then there’s the beautification-the default storefront page looks nothing like my site and I will have to learn how to override and customize the look and feel with the goal of matching the rest of the site. From what I’ve read in various forums it’s quite the task for zen cart.

I wanted to get this out and be publicly accountable for getting this done. Give me hell if you want to. For a sneak peek you can watch my progress here: http://paperduck.com/store/

Ant Salt and Pepper Shakers

I received these delightful Ant salt and pepper shakers for Christmas from my parent’s neighbors, Martha and David. What a surprise that was-The Thrill of the Grill! Martha is always on the lookout for ant things and has suggested that I print my Ant Forms onto paper plates, napkins and tablecloths. I’m looking into how or where I can get them made and haven’t had any luck. If you have a leads or ideas please drop a comment!

Hello world!

Welcome to Paper Duck Greetings! Just brushing off the dust here… finished installing the WordPress software and decorated it with my very own custom theme called “Paper Duck Theme”, naturally. I had to make my site look consistent so I went on an odyessy to learn how to make my own theme. It lead me to this site: So you want to create WordPress themes huh?

This is an excellent tutorial and I went through each step and did exactly as he said to do. I learned to modify his base files and added on my design elements. It took some time, but, it was worth it!

There is one bug (or is it just the feature ??), however. The links on my header and footer are broken when you go to the individual posts and comments pages. I’ll have to investigate this soon…

UPDATE: solved the “bug” which was neither bug nor feature. I just had to change the path in the links to point to the root… oops.
